Migration Projects

Most of our software projects are done on a fixed price basis.
Because we were originally set up by staff of the former Digital Equipment Co, our 'traditional' migration work has been of full application systems from non-DEC to DEC. These have included AS400, ICL ME29, ICL 2900, IBM Mainframe and Stratus.
Many of the projects have involved medium sized (several gigabytes) database conversions, including migration from flat-files to relational and from one database product to another.
The company has also done migrations from DEC to other systems and several VAX to Alpha migrations.
Conversion Centre has evolved a methodology for undertaking conversions and has developed tools written in VAXSCAN - a pattern matching programming language.

HIGH STREET BANK
AS400 to DEC ALPHA OPENVMS

Migration of AS400 system to OpenVMS. This was a major component of the new CREST Share Dealing System. This project included a number of re-conversions of customer developed versions of the AS400 software. The re-conversions were delivered within 3 days each.

MARKETING DATABASE Co.
IBM3090 to DEC ALPHA UNIX

Migration from an IBM 9000 DOS/VSE System to DEC UNIX. The system was largely batch and written in COBOL and Assembler. Conversion Centre Ltd converted two major subsystems to DEC UNIX, by re-writing the Assembler in C and COBOL and converting the existing COBOL to MICROFOCUS COBOL.

HIGH STREET BANK
IBM AS400 to VAX OPENVMS

A full system migration from AS400 to VAX VMS, including migration of the in-built relational database system of the AS400 to ORACLE RdB.

BANK
DEC VMS to IBM MVS

Migration of major Marketing Database System from DEC VAX to IBM MVS system.

PUBLISHER
ICL 2958 DME to VAX OPENVMS

The system was nearly at the end of its operational life; 17 years old, and based on ICL 1900 6-bit architecture. The code was converted to VAX COBOL, and the TOTAL database converted to Cincom’s SUPRA on OpenVMS. The system comprised some 200,000 lines of ICL 1900 and Range COBOL, some 30,000 lines of ICL PLAN (rewritten as COBOL), a TPS transaction processing system (replaced with DECforms/COBOL) and more than 200 ICL macros converted to VMS DCL.

GOVERNMENT DEPT.
DEC VAX to DEC ALPHA

Migration of the main VAX systems (7610 and 8700) to Alpha AXP. This project included all software migration (including UniFace) and all hardware installation and configuration.

MORTGAGE Co.
STRATUS and IBM 3090 to VAX OPENVMS

In this instance the customer accessed the system through a STRATUS front-end. The STRATUS was full and nearing the end of its maintainable life. The back-end batch system based on IBM 3090 was becoming very expensive to run.The application used STRATUS PASCAL, STRATUS FMS screen handling, IBM COBOL, an ADABAS database and Natural. There were 600,000 lines of COBOL, 1300 screens, a 6 gigabyte ADABAS database (converted to ORACLE RdB), 200,000 lines of ADABAS Natural (converted to COBOL) and 20,000 lines of IBM JCL converted to VMS DCL.

RETAILER
ICL ME29 to VAX OPENVMS

Business expansion was starting to be held up. The ME29 had "nowhere to go".This job involved a complete application re-write to provide the functional equivalent of the ICL system, and conversion of the 6 gigabyte database from IDMS to VAX/DBMS.

ASSET MANAGEMENT Co.
DEC VAX to DEC ALPHA

Migration of main back-office systems for dealing room from VAX to Alpha AXP, including conversion of TDMS to DECforms and conversion of COBOL and Macro-32 systems to AXP.

GOVERNMENT DEPT.
MISC. to DEC ALPHA UNIX

The Dept. were implementing an ORACLE database under OSF/1 on Alpha AXP. Raw data came from a number of sources, including ICL magnetic tapes, a DP bureau, and from existing PC-based applications.Conversion Centre Ltd provided a package of tape utilities, data conversion programs and scripts to import and convert the data into a common form for loading into the ORACLE database.
